About Green Buildings

As a national park, planning regulations in the Peak District can make it appear particularly difficult for people wanting to make changes to their homes, business or community premises – even if this is to make them more environmentally friendly. This, coupled with a general perception of it being an expensive process, stops many from pursuing the idea.

The Friends of the Peak District ‘Open Up’ project aims to encourage home owners, farms, rural businesses and communities in the Peak District area who have installed green technology to increase their building’s operational sustainability, to showcase their efforts.

The overall aim is to dispel perceived barriers and encourage the take up of small scale renewable energy technologies, or other sustainability features, by showing the public what constitutes appropriate green developments in a national park setting.

We will also be lobbying and working with the Peak District National Park Authorities to develop a more positive attitude to planning applications that will enable buildings to become “greener”.  Ensuring that the process is set up to support appropriate schemes in getting approval.

How will we do it?

We are organising the “Green Buildings Open Up Weekend” event to give people the chance to visit and talk to those who have successfully ‘greened’ their buildings.

This website is designed for people to access information about local ‘green’ buildings, and advice in “greening” their own properties.

We will also be lobbying and working with the Peak District National Park Authorities to develop a more positive attitude to planning applications that will enable more buildings to become “greener” in the area.

Guardians of the Peak District Landscape

Friends of the Peak District safeguards the landscapes of Britain’s first and most beautiful national park.

  • We challenge and campaign against developments that threaten the Peak District’s beauty and tranquillity.
  • We want thriving rural communities. We support homes for local people, sustainable jobs and local services.
  • Climate change is the biggest threat to our countryside. We champion suitable renewable energy, environmental building design and green transport schemes in the national park.
